Description

Thermodynamic simulation, daylighting analysis and retrofit study for the refurbishment of a 2000 m2 office building in Oxford, UK. The thermo-dynamic simulations, done with DesignBuilder (EnergyPlus) focused on reducing the heating and cooling demands, improving thermal comfort and air quality, and reducing the environmental impact of the building. Energy bills from the existing building were analysed, and the dynamic model was calibrated accordingly. Subsequently, a series of passive and active systems were modelled and compared through a life-cycle costing analysis.

Sports centre Turó De La Peira

Description

Thermodynamic and day-lighting simulation of the Turó de la Peira Indoor Swimming Pool and Sports Centre in Barcelona city. The 3,900 m2 building includes a heated pool and multi-sports hall, built with a cross-laminated timber structure. The project won the WAF (World Architecture Festival) 2019 category for Sports, and was High Commended in the Category “Use of Certified Timber”. The thermo-dynamic simulations focused on reducing the heating and cooling demands of the building, optimising daylighting and thermal comfort and reducing the environmental impact of the building. The optimization of the thermal envelope created savings of 182,011 kWh/a, approximately € 27,302/a. A 100 % passive heating, cooling and ventilation solution was developed for the multi-sports hall.

Energy audit of the Olympic Stadium and surrounding buildings, including the Palau Sant Jordi, the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium and the Olympic Esplanade.

The installations were audited, with proposals made on how to improve the efficiency of heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems, together with building automation and management systems (BMS’s) and lighting. The project was undertaken for the company Enertika, specialised in energy efficiency services.

Passivhaus consultancy of the IDAI Nature office building, certified with the standard Passivhaus Classic.

Passivhaus consultancy included PHPP energy simulation and performance optimisation, thermal envelope design, strategies to combat summer overheating and thermal bridge calculations.

The project won the International Prize for Excellence in Sustainable Architectural Design from the BUILD Sustainable Building Awards (United Kingdom).
