The Gin Distillery wins London RIBA Award 2018

Congratulations to Open Practice Architecture for winning the RIBA London Award 2018, with the retrofitting of the Gin Distillery!

The Gin Distillery is an impressive project that has transformed a derelict distillery "in the most unexpected corner of London E1" into a single family home, designed by Open Practice Architecture. Progetic is honoured to have been a part of the project.

The distillery, a building of the Victorian era, has been transformed through a project that unites contemporary architecture and current technical solutions with heritage conservation and restoration. The project has been awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The building is hidden in a parking area and surrounded by much taller buildings, and the external industrial appearance of the chunky and scarred brick walls was been brilliantly preserved, with openings recovered that had been bricked up.
The interior has been completely redesigned, opening spaces between floors to optimize natural light, for which Progetic undertook a daylighting study.
Despite challenging surroundings, space and intimacy is brought together through careful design. Open Practice Architecture has demonstrated great handling of light, volumes and views.
